Call for Public Comment on Proposed Revisions to 2020 Conditions for Accreditation and 2020 Procedures for Accreditation

NAAB continually evolves, responding to changes in the landscape for architecture education and improving the way we serve programs, students, volunteers and the public. NAAB considers input from stakeholders to be an important component of any process of revision to the Conditions or Procedures.

The NAAB Board of Directors therefore proposes the following revisions to the NAAB Conditions for Accreditation and Procedures for Accreditation. The comment period will be open between November 20 and December 22, 2025.

Revision to Conditions

Since NAAB first proposed revisions to the Conditions that included diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) elements, there have been many policy changes at the state and federal level impacting higher education and accreditation. Federal regulators have raised concerns about whether certain accreditation requirements could be in conflict with federal law, and federal agencies have taken steps to involve accreditors in investigations of civil rights claims. Additionally, an increased number of states have enacted DEI laws.

While NAAB remains deeply committed to its core values and mission we also must ensure that the Conditions align with current legal and regulatory realities facing NAAB-accredited programs and their sponsoring institutions.

These proposed revisions seek to support programs during this time of increased complexity while maintaining standards that speak to quality architecture programs and services for students.

Revision to Procedures

In our ongoing efforts to streamline and improve the accreditation process, the Board of Directors reviewed feedback from programs and has proposed an update to the policies on Corrections of Errors of Fact and Program’s Response to the Visiting Team Report (VTR). The intent of the update is to provide more clarity and to support programs in their accreditation process.
