Call for Public Comment on Proposed Revisions to 2020 Conditions for Accreditation

To foster improvement in architecture education through accreditation, NAAB seeks to continually evolve the way we serve programs, volunteers, and the public. A key component of this growth is grounded in the input we seek from our stakeholders. When NAAB proposes revisions to the Conditions, the Board seeks public feedback on those modifications prior to their approval and implementation.

As part of this process, NAAB is proposing for public comment revisions to the 2020 Conditions that are intended to:
  1. Address changes in the legal landscape surrounding institutions’ consideration of race and utilization of programs focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion across campus, including changes resulting from the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on race-conscious admissions and the laws, regulations, and guidance of various federal and state agencies.
  2. Lessen the administrative burden on programs by shortening the list of documents that must be provided to the public.
1. Changes in Federal and State Treatment of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The 2020 Conditions for Accreditation emphasize the importance of maintaining a learning environment that supports equitable access and opportunities for students, faculty, and staff and upholds the values of respect, equality, inclusion, and cultural awareness throughout the learning experience.

Changes in federal and state laws and policies challenge programs’ ability to demonstrate compliance with the current language in the Conditions. To address this issue, NAAB is proposing changes that continue to reinforce NAAB’s commitment to providing equitable access to architecture education and emphasize building cultural awareness while providing flexibility for programs complying with state and federal law.

2. Public Access to Accreditation Reports and Related Documents
The 2020 Conditions for Accreditation currently require each program to provide public access to a significant number of accreditation documents on its website. The proposal reduces the administrative burden on programs by shortening the list of documents that must be provided to the public. The proposed changes bring the requirements into alignment with the accreditation criteria of peer programmatic accreditors.
